CHAPTER-1

-Echo-

The fabric of her dress draped heavily around her frail form as she walked into her bedroom. It's too restricting. She thought. She was tired from her long day. The way her two middle sisters had bragged on and on about whatever some poor clueless boy had given them. Then their older sister, breathtakingly beautiful with her soft feathers and pale white wings, had spent a better portion of the day teaching them. Not that she was complaining. But Echo had just left her oldest sister's presence after a long and tiresome meeting that they had to attended.

Her sister had walked her back to her room as she always did and although Echo loved her sister with her entire being, she wished her she treated her like an adult and not an infant. But as her father often said, beggars can't be choosers.

Echo looked out from her window, watching the clouds lazily drift past her window. She stretched her arms above her head and opened her pale sky kissed wings to their full length, she gave a halfhearted flap and ruffled her feathers.

What lay beyond that sea of mist? Echo wondered. She knew other lands were the obvious answer. But it didn't quell her wonder. What did the people act like like? What were the different cultures. What of the music. Echo sighed wistfully. Oh the music was what she was most intended in.

“What are you thinking?” She glanced up at the small dove who watched her with wonder. The doves name was Ray, her chosen partner, and best and only friend. She knew Ray could easily find out on her own through their link but was being respectful of Echo's privacy.

With a flutter of her wings Echo closed them tight against her back and went to answer the dove just as a knock sounded at her door.

Ray turned with an annoyed huff. “Would you like me to answer it, and tell them you're not available?”

Echo nodded with a grateful look as Ray flew off.

The door opened and Echo could hear Ray talking with someone but as she began to tune out the conversation, Ray cried out in pain.

Echo quickly turned at the sound to see her dove laying on the cool tiled floor as a shadow stepped over her unconscious friend.

Too scared to scream she watched as the shadow took shape and a monster stood in its place, something out of a nightmares nightmare now towered before her.

Shimmering dark grey scales covered the monsters body, it was dressed in the bright colors of another Kingdom, which one she couldn't remember. His tongue flicked out with every breath, his reptilian red eyes gleamed.

“Come quietly and this will be painless.” The creature spoke around its jagged teeth.

Echo stepped back in fright, her hand against the window, it swung opened and the monsters face changed.

It went from mock innocence to barely controlled anger, his tail lashed. “Don't even think-” His sentence was cut short as he screamed out in pain.

Looking down Echo saw that Ray had bitten the beast on it's misshapen leg. “You stupid bird!” The monster howled as he tried to shake her loose.

   “Fly! Fly Echo!” Ray yelled.

With wide scared eyes Echo stood frozen. What did she do- !

The monster shook Ray loose and tossed her at the far wall, with a silent scream Echo ran towards Ray’s fallen form. Echo’s wings snapped open as she scooped the little dove into her shaking hands and just as quickly she turned on her heels, her bare feet hitting the floor as she ran for the open window, she beat her wings hard and dove.

She almost cleared the threshold when pain shot up her right wing.

She looked back to the fanged smile of the monster.

“And where are you going little angel?” It's tongue flashed out to lick its lips as it said angel, while its other clawed hand grabbed at her wing- bending her feathers and pinching the frail bone underneath.

Echo turned to face the clear endless sky then to her fallen partner, she knew what she had to do. With a violent backwards lurch she shot herself over the edge. The beast's clawed fingers pulled many feathers free then finally as she thought she was falling, the monsters clawed hand snapped shut once more.

With a voiceless scream she dangled, hanging a questionable amount above an unseeable end. She felt her feathers around her shoulder strain- then with a painful pop her shoulder dislocated making the monster laugh.

“You thought you could get away little angel? No no no I'm getting paid a pretty menny for your capture. Ah! Speak of the devil, they're here.”

Unable to turn Echo clutched Ray to her chest as she fought her tears.

Abruptly new pain laced up her body as she was slightly swung, once- twice then air was rushing past her. Her wings beat the air uselessly as the right suddenly stopped completely, she curled around Ray’s body as she was snatched out of the sky by a net.

Through blurry eyes she looked up and saw a ship above her, hauling her aboard.

As she was pulled on to the deck Echo’s stomach dropped as blinding fear took hold of her. She was surrounded by Demons. Bodies covered in either fur, feathers or scales they stood with their different clothes.

With a thud the reptilian one from her room landed on the ship and approached her, he kneeled and a smug smile lit up the beast's face, slowly it lifted one of her fallen feathers off the deck and regarded its rainbow color as it spoke to her.

“Odd that something so small, so light, and beautiful can be attached to something so fragile,” he sniffed wetly at the feather as another if its kind stepped forward and handed over a shiny piece of metal.

She stared as the object caught the light of the setting suns but her glance was not unnoticed. “Do you know what these are?” Without waiting for an answer a weird smile stretched across its reptilian face. “We're going to cut those pretty wings and make sure you can't escape.”

Panic rushed through her body at the words, she inched back under the net clutching Ray to her chest.

“Our employer won't like it buuut they’ll get over it. Hold her down boys!” he yelled.

For countless hours her voiceless screams begged to be heard, tears poured down her cheeks. Some time during her clipping she somehow had fallen asleep, when she woke her body was heavy and blood dotted her skin and her partly destroyed dress.

Her wings flinched with her movements and brought a new wave of tears to her eyes. With a tender touch, she felt along her left wing and felt the tears pour down her cheeks in rivers. Most if not all her feathers had been torn free and those that still lingered were cut at the tips. Making it absolutely impossible to fly.

She shivered. I have to get Ray and quickly find a way off this ship.

Ray! Oh clouds! Where was she?

Fearful Echo blindly searched for her partner in the damp darkness, when finally her bruised fingers stroked soft feathers. Slowly she scooped up her friend and held the little bird to her chest. Ray lifted her tiny head and rubbed it against Echo’s fingers before passing out.

That made Echo silently burst into tears, she cried long into the night. Scared of what the morning would bring.
